ROCKFORD, IL March 2, 2010– The Rockford Foresters announced today that Hononegah graduate pitcher Matt Carroll
and Boylan graduate catcher/3rd
baseman Austin Licon
have signed to play for the Rockford Foresters during their Inaugural Season.
“Matt Carroll and Austin Licon are outstanding athletes,” said Majority Owner/Team President Joe Stefani. “Both of these young men have proven themselves in the past and I know they will prove themselves while playing with the Foresters. Having both of these local players added to our roster shows our team’s continued effort to stock our roster full of local talent.”
Matt Carroll is a 5’10” and 165-pound right-handed pitcher from Rockton, Ill. Carroll currently plays for Valparaiso University where he is a freshman. Carroll was a four-year varsity pitcher, and had a career ERA of 2.89 with 185 strikeouts in 162.1 innings at Rockton Hononegah High School. He carried a career opponent batting average at .193 helping him post a 16-5 record. An honorable mention All-Conference pitcher the last two years, he pitched an eight-inning six-hitter to win the regional as a sophomore and also threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the Northern Illinois Conference as a junior. Carroll graduated from Hononegah in 2009.
“I feel very fortunate to be able to carry on my family’s tradition of being involved in baseball in the Rockford area,” said pitcher Matt Carroll. “This team will be a great way to get the exposure that has been difficult to get in the past. Rockford has some of the best ball players in the state and this will really help get more kids noticed.”
Austin Licon, who will be a catcher for the Rockford Foresters, is currently a junior at Davenport University in Michigan. Licon came to Davenport University after completing two years at Elgin Community College (ECC) where he was an All-American. “I’m honored to play for the Foresters,” said catcher Austin Licon. “This will be a great opportunity to not only get noticed, but also to play in front of my family and friends during the summer months.”
